Skype is the most famous of the VoIP programs, which allows calls to be made from a computer to any other computer or telephone in the world. In other words, a virtual (soft) phone in your computer. Gizmo now comes with their 3.0 version with many new features and strengthens the competition with skype.
With MSN Messenger, a famous program for exchanges of text messages in Brazil (and throughout the world), you can talk using voice and video with those that are in your contact list. Other programs like this are GoogleTalk and the Yahoo! Messenger. However, VoIP technology goes beyond. VoIP (voice over IP) pretty much places a virtual telephone in your computer. Free calls can be made to the users of the same program, in other words, skype to skype. In addition, a program that uses VoIP allows (for a small cost) you to speak to anyone in the world, you can call people regardless of their place on earth (pretty much) and both to cell phones and landlines. The vast majority of times these calls are quite clear. Sometimes it starts giving problems but I learned (I don't know if by coincidence or not) that it improves a lot if you close the call or the application and then restart it.
Skype is the market leader. Bought last year by ebay (the giant in the online auction sector) and it has many new features expected for the near future. But today came the news of Project Gizmo 3.0. Who?? Do not worry, Project Gizmo is still growing and with new features announced today, it has a better footing on the market.
Project Gizmo works on Windows, Mac and Linux, so far competition is all tied with skype. But... version 3.0 only arrived for the Windows user. Project Gizmo now offers very low prices on calls, it even reaches prices lower then skype. For example, calls made to the US using Gizmo costs US$0.019, with skype US$0.021. Thats right, less then 2 cents a minute, more or less BR$0.04 per minute. Better then our local cell phone company's promotion of BR$0.07 a minute for calls to the same carrier!! Even if you want to call your friend in Brazil, it can be cheaper then a long distance call. A minute of call from Gizmo costs US$0.051 (landline) and US$0.202 (cell phone). Skype has the price for landline calls to Brazil of US$0.062. By the price, Project Gizmo takes the lead. The biggest innovations of its 3.0 version was the integration with users from MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk and Yahoo! Messenger. Now this service allows you to call users in any of these messenger programs. I tried, but so far I couldn't transfer my contact list over, but I was able to make a test call to a user from AOL IM. The user only needs to place the address of the person, such as

.com and press call! The advantage is to have Project Gizmo's technology while making these calls. Other resources are: ability to record the calls, conference call with users from various platforms at the same time and there is even the possibility of file transfers. With skype, if you want you can also acquire a local number in another country so that your friends can call this number and you answer directly on your computer! This is a great resource because many times I need to talk to friends in other countries when this friend is away from the computer or they do not have skype. With this the person can call this number at any moment. Project Gizmo has a well structured program. There are still some flaws and errors, but the competition is getting started.Want to download it? There are versions in Portuguese and English as well as in other languages here .
