Linux's popularity gains strength with this news coming from India.
The India's state of Tamil Nadu closed a deal to release 40,000 dual boot desktops with Novell's Suse Linux and Microsoft Windows XP. The government company responsible for IT of Nadu will send out 40,000 computers to schools and government agencies across the state. The IT company, Eletronics Corporation (Elcot) informed that the desktops will come standard with Suse installation, with the option to add dual Windows boot on some government agency's computers. Only government desktops, that require software such as MS Office will have the option to have dual boot installation. The desktops that have both systems shall cost a bit under US$500, price lower then standards because the Lenovo computers will be provided by another company. Initial pricing for a Lenovo desktop with Windows or Suse Linux was stated at US$492. After negotiations the price for dual boot computers reached US$497. Elcot guarantee that users will be motivated to use Suse Linux. The Windows installation will be with the "XP Starter Edition" version that restricts users access on some features. The state of Tamil Nadu at the beginning of this year announced plans for all government agencies to change Windows for Linux and start using OpenOffice. The change should reduce government expenses in 15% to 25%. Meanwhile in Brazil... The government is slowly trying to change desktops for Linux. I have already hear reports that Fortaleza's municipal government is making the change as well as other state agencies.
