Tip This is a phrase that the programmers for StarDict chose to describe it. After installing and using the program, I have to admit that I'm starting to agree with them.
Actually, StarDict isn't a dictionary in itself, the program alone pretty much doesn't do anything. However, when you add the definitions of several other dictionaries, it becomes a great program. In other words, first you install the program and later download and install the dictionaries (all you need to do is extract the files and place it in StarDict's directory). The program works on Windows and Linux machines.
With StarDict you can search for the definition of a word and have it display similar and related words. The graphic display is very interesting for those who are seeking different meanings of the same word or derivative meanings. After using it for a while, I found that this function works only with some dictionaries, with others you can only see the text definitions. Speaking of which, the result of your search is pretty fast, even with several dictionaries loaded on the application.
With the program you can also manage the different dictionaries, choosing to search within each dictionary individually or changing the order of the search results.
Another very interesting resource is the translation service. You can choose to have a text translated inside StarDict using Yahoo, Google or other web services. So, you don't even have to navigate through different web pages, you can just write your text and choose the source language and the final language. The result isn't excellent but it helps greatly to interpret texts in other languages.
Last but not least, the program has a reading functionality that when activated it searches any word that you roll your mouse cursor on. When a word is identified the definition pops up. I found this function a bit irritating to be on all the time but it does wonders when you are using a different program and you want the definition of a word, the result comes to you immediately, without typing a word.
There are dozens of dictionaries available that work with StarDict and if you want you can search for converters to use the dictionary files from other programs. It is free, so there's really no harm in trying it out.
