The most recent movie from Woody Allen, Scoop is a good demonstration of the work of this director. This "comedy" reminds us of this last work, Match Point. the film is categorized as comedy but it definitely is not one of those comedy movies we are used to watching, it is a "comedy" in the style of Woody Allen.
Last year Woody Allen brought to us the movie Match Point with the same actress of his most recent film. Also in common between these two movies are: the country where it was recorded, England, and the style of adult comedy that is so vivid in movies of this writer/director.
Scoop can be described as a comedy developing from the suspense of the hunt to catch a serial killer. In the beginning of the movie we see the funeral of a great journalist Joe Strombel (played by Ian McShane). His passion for journalism and breaking news do not fade away with his death. Somehow Strombel comes back to the world of the living to give his last contribution, reveal a very important clue to solve the most recent murder case in England, his last scoop. The only person that Strombel comes into contact is Sondra Pransky (played by Scarlett Johansson), a journalism student from the US. Sondra is on vacation in England visiting some friends from the high society. She later receives a message from the late Strombel, a huge lead into a story that involves murder, prostitution and British upper society. Strombel (picture of the left) appears to tell the news to Sondra in the middle of a magic trick performed by Splendini. But how is Sondra going to investigate the story?? With the help of this new magician friend with the artistic name Splendini and real name Sid Waterman (Woody Allen). The duo then tries to reveal the great mistery of the "Tarot Card Killer."
Woody Allen wrote and directed the movie and even starred on it in the role of Splendini, also known as Sid Waterman. His role is the comedy part of the film. A divorced man that makes a living with magic shows for children now tries to be an investigative reporter. The magician has a calm life until he is called by Sondra to reveal the great murder mystery. The actress Scarlett Johansson has already worked with Woody Allen in his last movie, Match Point. The duo is working out quite well and there is already another project to be released in 2008, the Spanish Project. In Scoop, Sondra receives the responsibility from "the world of the dead" through Strombel to write the story of the year and also to save lives by solving the murder mystery of the "Tarot Card Killer." The subject under investigation is Peter Lyman, a British aristocrat played by Hugh Jackman. The same actor is well known on screens for having played (and still being) Wolverine in the X-Men movies. Throughout the entire move, Sondra tries to find clues to prove the suspicions of the late Stombel. But, things do not go as planned and the two start to have a relationship.
The entire movie has its comedy pitch coming from the role of Sid. But Scoop is not a simple comedy as we saw in the movie Norbit, it is a classical adult comedy. The director even manages to place together suspense and comedy with drama. This is what makes Woody Allen's movies so interesting. The movie reached Brazilian screens on March 16th.
